Principles Guiding the Internship Opportunity

Internship Offers and Acceptances

There is no specified application cutoff – for any of a number of reasons, students may have been precluded from application due to schedule, registration or other issues outside of their control. We extend our understanding of these special circumstances (a need for modified start, end or vacation date) when possible. Student applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis. A formal orientation / introduction date, however, is set when possible and is based on the number of participating interns. This date is subject to change.

We publish these principles so that all students applying to our internship program and to all others affected by these policies may be guided by our standards. A copy of these policies is available online, in internship materials, or in handouts at on-campus recruiting events.

Our internship program coordinators strive to ensure everyone involved in recruiting or selecting interns are familiar with our policies, with our need to communicate these policies to applicants, and the importance of adhering to our policies. We ask that universities and professional schools representatives whose students apply to our internship program ensure that these policies are understood and adhered to by their students.

We endeavor to inform, before orientation day, anyone whose application is no longer under consideration; those who continue to be under consideration may be notified. Information such as the applicant’s selection may be communicated to applicants prior to orientation. We may not solicit information about an applicant’s preference of internship program or the intention to accept or decline an internship until after it is officially tendered.

To ensure everyone has ample opportunity to make arrangements to join our team, applicants are urged to reply to our offer no later than the day prior to orientation day. It is in everyone’s best interest that candidates make and communicate their decisions to accept or reject each offer as quickly as possible; we may inquire as to the applicant’s progress in making a final decision.

Should a candidate fail to accept by the ordinary close of business the day prior to orientation, the offer is rescinded.
Students should be aware that accepting an offer is serious business: it means that a spot has been reserved, materials and projects prepared, and staff and resources allocated. Offers which are rejected allow us to offer positions to other applicants – we ask for prompt notification. Applicants who have accepted an internship offer from us should fully consider the commitment and any ethical obligation to refuse any second offer from another program.

Applicants who fail to respond to two (2) e-mails and cannot be reached by phone may be notified within 72 hours after the end of day prior to orientation.

Internship training directors document their verbal agreement in e-mail or other communications. General conditions of the appointment and the date on which the internship begins are provided, and a copy of that letter may be made available to the applicant’s academic program director.
